Modern Verdurian Terms

As part of the Almea+400 project, this document lists the words used in Modern Verdurian for new technology and social developments. As the project continues, more words will be added; they will also be found in the lexicon. Dates of future inventions are subject to change.

For “canonical Verdurian”, this replaces (and expands on) my Secret Dictionary of Modern Verdurian, which I made for people who wanted to talk about modern things. Because a surprising number of such people were Swedish, I used quite a bit of Swedish; this influence is, perhaps sadly, not present in Almea. References to Earth are still contained in that document. I’ve changed several terms, not least now that I know who discovered the technologies involved. Science is definitely an international project in the last centuries.

Verdurian spelling was reformed in 3728— a time when technology had advanced beyond our own, and the first permanent base on Iliažë had just been set up. Spellings in this document are pre-reform, and by that time no longer reflected the spoken language. A few words do reflect sound change; e.g. the abbreviation ša- for ‘electric’, from sya(metec).

The words here are the ordinary term. Often people initially used more verbose terms and these have simplified, as we turned ‘taximeter cabriolet’ into ‘cab’. So e.g. nasitec ‘truck’ became nas; bežecî mižigoi ‘moving pictures’ became bežecî, etc.
